Why an app can’t fix this

Around 1 in 20 adults live with ADHD. Many more live with related patterns of impulsivity, time blindness, or working-memory gaps under conditions like autism and anxiety. None of the current tools on iOS or Android were designed with that brain in mind. This post sets out what a native, opt-in ADHD support mode could look like, feature by feature, and why it belongs at the operating system level rather than in a separate app.


A third-party app sees one slice of your phone. It might see your screen time, or your notifications, or your purchase history, but rarely more than one at once, and never with the permissions needed to act across all three. The operating system already sees everything. Apple and Google both treat accessibility as a genuine part of the platform, not an add-on. Extending that thinking to ADHD is a natural next step, not a stretch.
Here is what that could look like in practice, with the mechanics of each feature and how it plays out for a real kind of person.


Purchase duplication check


How it works: before checkout completes, the phone checks recent order confirmations, wallet passes, and ticket emails already on the device. If something similar shows up, it surfaces one line: “You already have a confirmation for something like this from [date].” Nothing is blocked. It’s a flag, not a wall.


In practice: a graphic designer buys concert tickets on impulse after seeing an ad on Instagram. She’s done this before, twice, for the same kind of show, and forgotten by the time the tickets arrive. With this feature active, the phone catches the match against an email confirmation from three months earlier and asks her to look before paying. She checks her inbox, finds the original booking, and cancels the new one before it costs her anything.


Late-night purchase friction


How it works: the user sets a time window, for example 11pm to 6am, and a spending threshold. Any purchase inside that window above the threshold triggers a short mandatory pause, ten minutes is a reasonable default, followed by a one-tap “still want this” confirmation.
In practice: a warehouse worker on a night shift pattern finds himself buying gadgets from his phone during his break, most of which sit unopened in boxes by the following week. The pause doesn’t stop him buying anything he genuinely wants. It gives his brain ten minutes of distance from the dopamine hit of the “buy now” button, which for a lot of ADHD brains is enough to break the automatic pattern.


Scroll interruption


How it works: the user chooses which app categories to monitor, social and shopping are the obvious ones, and sets a duration threshold. After sustained, uninterrupted use past that threshold, a single screen appears asking if they want to keep going. It can’t be swiped away without a decision.


In practice: a university student sets social apps to trigger after forty minutes of continuous use. At 1am, mid-scroll, the interruption appears. She’s given a real choice, rather than the app simply continuing to feed her the next video with no natural stopping point at all. Some nights she keeps scrolling. Most nights, having the choice put in front of her is enough to close the app and go to sleep.


Quick capture


How it works: one gesture, available from any screen or even the lock screen, opens a blank field for text or voice. No app to find, no menu to navigate, nothing beyond the biometric check already protecting the phone.


In practice: a plumber mid-job remembers he needs to order a part before the supplier closes for the day. Without a fast way to capture that, the thought is gone by the time he finishes the job three hours later. With one gesture, he speaks the note and moves on. The friction of opening an app and finding the right list is exactly the point where ADHD working memory tends to lose the thread.


Time cues during app use


How it works: a quiet, non-intrusive marker appears every fifteen or thirty minutes during an extended session in a chosen app, showing how much time has passed without requiring the user to check a clock.
In practice: a freelance writer opens his laptop’s phone-mirrored research app to check one fact and looks up two hours later. Time blindness, a genuinely common ADHD trait, means minutes and hours don’t register the way they do for other people until something interrupts the state. A light, regular cue does that interrupting gently, without breaking concentration the way a full alarm would.


Notification batching by load


How it works: instead of every notification arriving the instant it’s sent, low-priority alerts are grouped and delivered in windows the user sets, for example every ninety minutes. High-priority contacts and apps still come through immediately.


In practice: a nurse finds her concentration during a task fractures every time an app pings, and rebuilding focus afterwards costs her more time than the interruption itself. Batching doesn’t block anything permanently. It changes the rhythm of when it arrives, and for a brain that struggles with task-switching cost, that rhythm change is the whole benefit.


The privacy point worth making clearly


Every feature above can run entirely on the device. No purchase history needs to leave the phone. No browsing pattern needs to sync to a server anywhere. That’s a stronger privacy position than most shopping or wellbeing apps already on the App Store or Play Store, and it’s worth Apple and Google leading with that rather than treating it as a constraint.


Who this actually helps


ADHD is the clearest case, but the same friction points show up for autistic people managing sensory overload from notifications, for anyone recovering from burnout who needs help pacing their own screen use, and for people managing anxiety around spending. Building this as a flexible, configurable set of toggles rather than a single fixed mode means it can serve more than one diagnosis without pretending they’re all the same thing.


Where this could start


Not all six features need to land at once. Purchase duplication check and late-night purchase friction are the two most self-contained, easiest to explain, and lowest-risk to ship first. Real adoption data from those two would tell Apple and Google far more about what’s worth building next than any proposal document could.
